PDUFA Date

Definition

The FDA deadline to decide on a drug application — one of the most precisely dated and high-magnitude catalysts in biotech trading, often producing 30–100%+ moves.

PDUFA stands for Prescription Drug User Fee Act, the legislation that requires the FDA to meet decision deadlines on new drug applications (NDAs) and biologic license applications (BLAs) in exchange for user fees paid by pharmaceutical companies. The PDUFA date is the statutory deadline by which the FDA must complete its review and issue a decision — approve, issue a Complete Response Letter (CRL, effectively a rejection), or extend the review period.

Why PDUFA Dates Move Stocks

For small and mid-cap biotech companies with one or two pipeline drugs, an FDA approval can be transformational — the difference between a company with and without a commercial product. Market capitalizations can increase 50–200% on approval, or decline 40–80% on rejection. Because the decision date is known months in advance and the binary outcome (approve/reject) is well-defined, PDUFA dates attract significant options activity as traders position for the expected move.

How to Trade PDUFA Events

Pre-PDUFA positioning is high risk because the binary outcome means directional bets can be completely wrong. The stock often runs significantly in the weeks before the PDUFA date as optimistic investors position ahead of an expected approval, then sells off after approval (buy the rumor, sell the news). PDUFA surprises — decisions that come earlier than the deadline, or unexpected rejections on drugs expected to be approved — produce the most dramatic moves and the best signal quality for the TradeAI News engine.

PDUFA in the TMS Scoring System

TradeAI News monitors FDA decision publications in real time and classifies them as approval or rejection catalysts within seconds. PDUFA approvals for small-to-mid cap biotech companies with no prior commercial revenue tend to score highest in the TMS engine — they represent the most binary, company-defining catalysts in the equities market.
