Premarket Gap

Definition

A significant difference between a stock's previous closing price and its current premarket trading price, typically caused by overnight catalysts.

A premarket gap occurs when a stock's price in the extended hours trading session (4am–9:30am ET) moves significantly away from its previous day's closing price. The gap represents the market's instantaneous revaluation of the stock in response to new information that arrived after the previous session closed.

Premarket gaps are caused by catalysts: earnings releases (typically after 4pm ET or before 9:30am ET), FDA decisions (commonly announced between 8am and 9:30am ET), overnight news events, geopolitical developments, and analyst actions. The size of the gap reflects the market's initial assessment of how significantly the new information changes the company's value.

Gap Direction and Catalyst Type

Gap ups (stock trading above previous close) are typically caused by positive catalysts: earnings beats with raised guidance, FDA drug approvals, positive M&A news, analyst upgrades. Gap downs are caused by negative catalysts: earnings misses, FDA rejections, downward guidance revisions, adverse legal rulings, analyst downgrades. The size of the gap is correlated with the degree of surprise — a 5% earnings beat produces a smaller gap than a 20% beat.

Gap Fill vs Gap and Go

Two common premarket gap outcomes are gap fill (the stock retraces to its previous close by end of day) and gap and go (the stock continues in the direction of the gap). Gap fills are more common in stocks that gap on weak catalysts, have high short interest covering (gap up on short covering fades when covering is complete), or gap into significant technical resistance. Gap and go moves are more common in stocks with strong fundamental catalysts, confirming volume, and no major overhead resistance.
