Level 2 Quotes
Real-time order book data showing all bid and ask prices from market makers and ECNs, revealing the depth of supply and demand at each price level.
Level 2 quotes display the full order book for a stock — every current bid and ask price from every market maker and electronic communication network (ECN) participating in the market, along with the number of shares available at each price. This provides a much richer picture of supply and demand than Level 1 data (which only shows the best bid and ask).
Reading the Level 2 Screen
The left column of a Level 2 screen shows all current bids (buyers) sorted from highest to lowest price. The right column shows all current asks (sellers) sorted from lowest to highest. Large blocks of shares at a specific price level indicate a supply/demand wall — a zone where significant selling or buying pressure will be encountered. Market makers often stack bids or asks to defend price levels or facilitate large client orders.
What Level 2 Reveals
Level 2 data is most useful for: identifying immediate support and resistance (large bid stacks and ask stacks), estimating how much a large order will move the price (thin order books create more slippage), watching for spoofing patterns (large orders that are quickly cancelled, a red flag for manipulative activity), and timing entries and exits in fast-moving catalysts where the bid/ask spread can widen dramatically.
Level 2 in Catalyst Trading
During a high-conviction catalyst event, Level 2 changes rapidly — ask walls are absorbed by aggressive buyers, spreads widen, and the order book can become very thin. This is where the risk of large slippage is highest. Watching Level 2 during the first minutes of a catalyst move helps traders understand whether the move is being driven by real order flow or is likely to reverse when a large ask wall is encountered.
