VWAP (Volume-Weighted Average Price)

Definition

The average price of a stock weighted by volume throughout the day. Used by institutions as a benchmark and by day traders as a key support and resistance reference.

VWAP is calculated by summing the product of price times volume for every transaction throughout the trading day, then dividing by total volume. The result is the average price at which all shares have traded on a volume-weighted basis — a price that reflects where the most trading activity has occurred, weighted by size.

Why Institutions Use VWAP

Large institutional investors — mutual funds, pension funds, index funds executing rebalances — measure execution quality against VWAP. "Beating VWAP" means buying below VWAP or selling above VWAP, indicating that execution was better than average. This creates a self-fulfilling dynamic: because so many institutional participants are benchmarked against VWAP, they naturally buy on dips below it and sell on moves above it, which reinforces VWAP as a meaningful intraday level.

VWAP as Support/Resistance

For day traders, VWAP serves as one of the most reliable intraday support and resistance levels. Stocks trending above VWAP are in an intraday uptrend, supported by the fact that institutional buyers are likely to defend the level. Stocks trading below VWAP are under institutional selling pressure. The most reliable catalyst trades often involve a stock gapping up through VWAP on a catalyst and then finding support at VWAP on the first pullback — a "VWAP reclaim" that confirms the trend shift.

VWAP in the TradeAI News Context

TradeAI News reports VWAP data in the Options Flow and Dark Pool panels for each ticker, allowing traders to quickly assess whether current price is above or below the institutional benchmark before entering a catalyst trade. A catalyst that fires on a stock already above VWAP has a different risk profile than one firing below VWAP.
